Stories You Make Up That Hold You Back
Your self-protection mechanisms are making up stories that hold you back.
There is a saying that “if you think you can’t,” that is true. The power of the mind is incredible. It can be your most valuable asset that helps propel you to greatness. At the same time, it can be your biggest liability — holding you back like kryptonite around your neck.
Ten years of doing shadow work with men, I have heard all the stories men make up as reasons to avoid the pain of doing something hard.
Here is a list of 20:
1. I’m not good enough
2. I will probably fail
3. Other people will think I’m simple
4. I don’t know how
5. I’m not smart enough
6. I don’t have a university degree
7. I don’t have the experience
8. That’s not my area of expertise
9. I only know how to do this
10. I’m too busy
11. I don’t have enough time
12. It’s too risky
13. It will take too long
14. It’s too much work
15. It’s too much PT
16. Someone has already done it
17. I will have to give something else up
18. That’s below me
19. I’m not disciplined enough
20. I’m not creative enough
Do you recognise any of these? Do you make up any of these as parts of your story to avoid taking yourself out of your comfort zone?
Try catching yourself in the moment and ask yourself, “is that true?”
